South Honor Roll Reception
High-achieving scholars and their supportive family and friends were the guests of honor at South Seattle College on May 7 at the Annual Honor Roll Reception, where special guest Marcus Trufant – a recently retired member of the world-champion Seattle Seahawks – joined in the celebration.
Students who have made the President's List (3.8 GPA and above) and the Dean's List (3.5 GPA and above) from the Fall '13 and Winter '14 Quarters were invited. With nearly 1,200 students making the lists, the Brockey Center was packed.
"Being here and seeing how all my hard work has paid off means so much to me and my mom and my family," said Running Start student Christina Kazaryan, who plans to study mathematics at University of Washington after obtaining her transfer degree at South.
"To be able to come here and for two straight quarters being on the Dean's list and the President's List means so much to me," Christina's mom Irina Minasova said.
For student Kaela Hayes, the Honor Roll Reception was a chance to celebrate her achievement with her uncle and grandmother: her "biggest supporters."
"It meant a lot (to make the honor roll); it meant that they recognized me for trying hard and all the studying I've done," she said.
"I'm really proud of her, I really am," Kaela's uncle Bill Lein said.
Former Washington State and Seattle Seahawk standout corner Marcus Trufant addressed the crowd, congratulating South students on their accolade, encouraging them to stay focused, and reinforcing the importance of support in achieving one's goals.
"If you have a dream, you have to stay on track with that dream. Do not get sidetracked," he said. "I think a lot of you are here today because your family and your friends have your back and help you achieve in college."
