Q & A with Honors Student Hassan Abdi

South student Hassan Abdi

Recently, South students Hassan Abdi and David Yama were named to the All-Washington Academic Team.  Abdi and Yama will join the rest of the outstanding students who were selected for this exclusive company on March 26, where they will be honored with a luncheon at South Puget Sound Community College.

Members of the All-Washington Team are chosen from the state’s community and technical colleges. These students are chosen not just for their outstanding achievements in the classroom, but also in their communities. Some of you may recognize Abdi from our social media series, FACES OF SOUTH. We sat down with him for a Q & A that covered everything from test preparation to his interest in Computer Science.

South: What does being a part of the All-Washington Academic Team mean to you?

Abdi: It means that I am member of a hardworking team. I am also excited that my hard work has been recognized.

South: What challenges did you have to overcome to achieve this?

Abdi:  There were many challenges that I overcame. I grew up in a war-torn city Mogadishu, Somalia and I continued my education. I also take care of myself and my family, while continuing my education.

South: What do you think is the key to your academic success?

Abdi: I set goals for myself and I try hard to accomplish these goals. I worked hard in every course I took. I was also tutoring at South’s MAST which helped me practice my math and science knowledge I already learned.

South: What is your favorite class that you have taken at South?

Abdi: My favorite class I took at South is CSC 142. It is programming class and it is important for my major.

South: How has South helped you to get to where you are?

Abdi: South provided me many services which helped me to get here – faculty and advisors alike. Without South’s faculty and administration, I would l not be where I am now.

South: What drew you to the field you are studying?

Abdi: I liked working with computers when I was young and also I liked to help other people. By becoming a Software Developer I can help other people by creating software that makes their lives easier.

South: How do you prepare for a test?

Abdi: I prepare for a test as I am learning the material. I don’t wait for the night before the test to prepare, I’m constantly preparing for a test.

South: What clubs or activities are you involved in on campus? Outside of campus?

Abdi: I am Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society member and an RST academy member; also I was co-organizer of #hourofcode through my volunteer work with Women in STEM club here at the college.

Stay tuned for the next subject of our Q & A series with Abdi’s All-Washington teammate, David Yama.
