South Alumna Wins Women in STEM Excel Scholarship
A South Seattle College alumna with aspirations to enter the electrical and computer engineering industry has been named the winner of the first-annual WISE (Women in STEM Excel) Scholarship. Angela Flores-Marcus was selected as the recipient of the $1,500 scholarship, established to support, empower and encourage women in Washington state pursuing an education in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM).
The WISE Scholarship, supported by Bellevue-based surgeon Dr. Alexander Sobel, selected Angela from a number of applicants for her “academic dedication, leadership, and commitment to community service.” Angela graduated from South with her associate degree in electrical engineering this past June. On campus, she was known for her warm personality, volunteering and leadership skills. During her two years at South, she became president of the Women in STEM-Club, co-chair of the Queer-Straight Alliance, an undergraduate research assistant, and tutor for the Math and Learning Lab.
Angela has recently been inducted into the Alfie Scholars Program at Seattle University, which will provide financial aid, academic support and leadership opportunities as she works towards her B.A. in electrical engineering. Her accomplishments have also earned her a spot in the 2017 All-Washington Academic Team, for her commitment to excellence in the classroom and community. Angela has also been selected as a 2017 Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Silver Scholar.
