Congrats to South Seattle College’s All-Washington Academic Team Honorees

Johnae Beckem and Sadin Safi

Congratulations to South Seattle College students Johnae Beckem and Sadin Safi who have been selected as the college’s 2018 All-Washington Academic Team honorees. Sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges, Johnae and Sadin are among 78 of Washington’s top scholars who will represent the state’s 34 community and technical colleges as members of the All-Washington Academic Team. Students are selected based on their high academic achievements, community involvement and service to their colleges. Honorees also receive scholarship support towards their transfer to a four-year college or university.

Johnae and Sadin will represent South at the annual state-wide community and technical college reception with Governor Jay Inslee and South Interim President Peter Lortz on March 22 in Olympia.  They will also be considered for further scholarship support if named to the All-USA Academic Team.

Johnae Beckem

As a campus leader and student employee, Johnae Beckem has enriched the South Seattle College campus community with her inclusive personality and flair for marketing and promotion. Raised by a single parent, Johnae says her mother, siblings and community have motivated her to pursue academic excellence and make the most of her college experience. Since starting at South in 2016, Johnae has become a student employee at the SSC Art Gallery, including becoming a member of the Art Gallery Advisory Committee, has been involved in Drama Club, and the founder of the Arts & Expression Club. As President of the Black Student Union, Johnae also helped strengthen connections between students on campus with film festivals and cultural discussions. After graduating with her Associate in Business degree, Johnae will attend Howard University, a historically black college in Washington D.C., to pursue her bachelor’s degree in marketing. She hopes to find a position in retail marketing and eventually open her own marketing and public relations firm.

Sadin Safi

Driven by a passion to help others, South Seattle College student Sadin Safi has demonstrated both her budding leadership skills and enthusiasm for community service and volunteerism. As the Marketing Officer for South’s chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, Sadin helped tackle food insecurity on campus by operating the SSC Food Pantry, which serves 50 students in need a week on average. In November 2017, she also organized a campus-wide Thanksgiving Food Drive to support donations to the food pantry. Currently pursuing her Associate of Science degree, Sadin discovered her love of biology and chemistry while taking college-level courses in high school. In her free time, Sadin volunteers at a Seattle area hospital’s emergency room. During her shifts, Sadin regularly shadows ER doctors and assists nurses with patient care. After graduation, she hopes to pursue a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Washington-Seattle, and plans to enter medical school to become a trauma surgeon.

Congratulations Johnae and Sadin!
