Reach Your Goals & Feel Good with Campus Recreation at South

Are you looking to start or continue healthy habits in 2018? I met up with Colby Keene, Campus Recreation Coordinator, to talk about what resources students have on campus to help them reach their fitness goals!

Q: What activities does the Campus Recreation have for students?
A: At South, we have something fun and exciting every season! Winter brings snowshoe and ski outings, during the spring and summer we have weekly cycling or hiking trips and all year round we have our city league soccer club.

Living in the Pacific Northwest, sometimes the weather doesn’t accommodate outside activities, so we also have our on-campus fitness gym available throughout the year. We periodically hold workout and nutrition workshops that are free and a lot of fun. We welcome all students here, and encourage them the reach their goals and feel good!

Q: Does South have team sports?
A: South does not have collegiate team sports, but if there is enough interest, I have facilitated sports teams for soccer, softball, basketball, dodgeball and flag football! Unfortunately, we don’t have facilities to host some of these sports on campus, so we will gather at a space in the city to practice and compete. We regularly have enough interest in a South soccer league.

Q: Is the Fitness Center free for students?
A: At South, our Fitness Center is free to all students — all you need to do is show your student ID and a copy of your schedule. We have on-site locker rooms with showers. However, we do not provide locks. Our student staff members are all on career paths to work in the fitness world. They are available to help individual students work on their fitness goals, whether you want to increase your pitching speed or start power lifting…we can help you get on track!

Q: Are there any fitness clubs on campus?

A: Currently we have a Dance Club and Yoga Club. As our student leaders graduate, our activities change depending on what students on campus are interested in. The Club Center is a great resource for anyone that wants to start a new club or revive a previously existing one!

Q: Do you have any tips for students that want to get more exercise in their routine?
A: Absolutely, we’re here to help students achieve their personal goals and feel good! Make sure to drink lots of water, and if you can’t get a full workout in every day, just going for a walk is a great way to destress and get your brain pumping!

Every Friday at 1 p.m. students, staff and faculty meet to walk the West Duwamish Green Belt Trails, which is very popular.Make sure to bring some good walking shoes and meet at the sports courts.
