New ESL Class Builds Digital Literacy and Career Skills

This summer, instructors Geraldine Werts and Nhi Nguyen launched a new course, ESL 039, at South Seattle College. Designed for non-native English speakers and Workforce-eligible students, the intermediate-level course emphasized career exploration, workplace English, and digital literacy.
Students built a career portfolio project tailored to their individual goals. Projects included writing a resume and cover letter, using design tools to develop a personal brand and digital materials, and preparing a business proposal.
On August 26, the class held a showcase where students presented their projects and demonstrated advanced online tools. The celebration also featured games, hands-on activities, and prizes.
One highlight was the work of student Harry (Jun Zheng), a former business consultant from China. As his class project, he successfully established an LLC and presented two seminars:
- Branding 101 – Personal Branding for Content Creators and Entrepreneurs
- How to Establish an LLC in Washington State
Harry’s journey illustrates how the course empowers students to transform classroom learning into real-world success.
